While the titles in particular escape me at the moment, I know I have read several stories and novels where the first person was used most effectively in capturing the readers' interest and making them feel that they had some emotional stake in the story plot.
Perhaps this could work in this story with the largely passive hero as first person narrator, reflecting on the events that happened in his past. It would also make the necessary flashbacks (to his experiences prior to meeting the heroine) a more natural part of the story.

The wealth of his nation has historically come at the expense of others' life and liberty. So when he sits down to dinner, the food he eats comes out of a bloody present and a bloody past. "You've written a hit musical! How will you avoid having fame go to your head?" I'll walk upside down so that my blood will fill in any empty spaces and prevent fame from seeping in. Or I would just refuse to go to Fame in the first place.
